Making All Things New
By Henri J. M. Nouwen

What does it mean "to lead a spiritual life?" With characteristic directness and succinctness, the author suggests an answer for those who have no idea. He begins with a persuasive sketch of the disconnectedness, boredom, resentment, and depression pandemic in postmodern life, identifying them with Jesus' "worry." He then argues that we need to undergo a conversion from this "worry" to a faith and hope that actively shape our thoughts and affects, as well as our action. His theology here is strongly trinitarian and scriptural. Finally, he takes up the disciplines that make this conversion (and the introduction to the spiritual life) possible.
He urges the need for solitude, giving concrete suggestions on practicing it, and the parallel need for the community of sharing faith and hope. This little book-really only a long article-is a true invitation, carefully leaving out mention of the difficulties and obstacles sure to come later. But it will be useful to pastors and counselors who want a brief, scripturally-based statement about living the interior life in Christ.
