The Hard Sayings of Jesus
By F. F. Bruce
Downers Grove, InterVarsity Press, 1983. 266 pp. $6.95.
F.F. Bruce, former Rylands Professor of biblical criticism at University of Manchester, has written short insightful essays on 70 sayings of the Lord. They may be read with great profit as devotionals, studied by a class, or used as resources for a series of messages. They also serve as a helpful commentary on key questions of conduct.
Each saying is interpreted richly in full biblical spectrum and in the light of contemporary issues: war, peace, divorce, women's liberation, and social justice. The sweep of background is extensive and enlightening. The interpretations are moderate in tone and not excessive.
Bruce sees the question behind the outward question and highlights the

principle behind the pragmatic answer. The material is fresh and provocative so that one has to ponder and react. His knowledge of rabbinical literature and present theological writings are woven together to show the force of what Jesus said.
A reading of this volume will give greater insight into the humanity and life style of Jesus for contemporary understanding.
