If the Bible is God's word to us, how do the psalms, as prayers to God, fit in? The subtitle of McCann's fascinating book points us in a proper direction: the psalms as torah, or instruction. When we think of it, not all the psalms are prayers, especially Psalm 1. It recommends "meditating" or ruminating on the law day and night. This psalm introduces the psalter and suggests the orientation developed in this book. This perspective is presented and clearly exemplified for songs of praise, lament, trust, and so on. The final chapter sketches the usage of the psalms in the New Testament. An appendix by Nancy McCann treats the singing of the psalms (with a history and helpful bibliography). The entire work is carried off with an attractive literary flair (complete with references to Flannery O'Connor and others). McCann's fresh approach will surely enliven the reading of the psalms for all. It is a pleasure to recommend this study enthusiastically. May
