The new editors have carefully incorporated, where appropriate, material from the earlier (1915) edition of this well-known title, describing the result as "at once more scholarly and more conservative." The general tone of the articles, which are signed, tends to be almost conversational and thus inviting to lay, as well as to professional readers. On controversial issues, opposing views are considered, and detailed bibliographies are appended to most articles.

The first volume has appeared, and the remaining three are promised at yearly intervals. This is a work that should be acquired by church and seminary libraries, as well as strong private collections.
