Who Is This Christ?
Gospel Christology and Contemporary Faith

By Reginald H. Fuller and Pheme Perkins
Philadelphia, Fortress, 1983. 169 pp. $8.95.

In 1980, Reginald Fuller, Professor of New Testament at Virginia Theological Seminary, and Pheme Perkins, Associate Professor of New Testament at Boston College, delivered lectures at the Biblical Institute of Trinity College in Burlington, Vt. They concluded that there was sufficient common ground between them to turn the lectures into a co-authored book, and this volume is the result.

Of the twelve chapters in the book, the first eight are an excellent summary and analysis of contemporary biblical scholarship on Christology in the Gospels. The last four chapters discuss the significance of biblical scholarship for a Christology that addresses the problems of contemporary culture and a pluralistic world. The book is also a dialogue with Edward Schillebeeckx's Jesus: An Experiment in Christology. The book argues for a Christology that begins from below with the historical Jesus and discovers that meaning of the incarnation in Jesus' Abba-experience.
