Struggle

By John W. Crawford

A fading rose of summer,
she holds her head against the breeze
and takes her place among the rows of spring,
unaware of tones of gray and autumn,
slender threads falling softly here and there
bearing silent witness to the long, slow hands of time.

And silent too her lonely war,
pulling strong to stay alive and grow, expanding
finding breath for new creation,
trying hard to color green the long dark line of winter.

John W. Crawford is Professor of English, Henderson State University, Arkadelphia, Arkansas. He is the author of a volume of poems, Making the Connection, and his poem "Once It Was" appeared in the July 1991 issue of THEOLOGY TODAY.
