JOHN A. MACKAY: 1889-1983

On Thursday, June 9, 1983, John A. Mackay, the founder and first Editor of THEOLOGY TODAY, died at Princeton after a long illness. His life-span covered nearly a century, within which the impact of his influence on church and theology were everywhere acknowledged, literally around the world.

Missionary, scholar, churchman, seminary president, author, and ecumenist-John A. Mackay stood at the center of the controversial issues of his time. A deeply committed Christian, he gave unstintingly of his considerable talents for the cause of "Christ and the Church"-a favorite phrase he often used to sum up the essence of the Gospel.

A future issue of this journal, which meant so much to him, will carry a more complete memorial and evaluation.
