Make Believe

By Robert Karl Bohm

Among the silent tombs
Day dawns on God's surprise
As Eden's Lord assumes
Again a gard'ner's guise.

To huddled hiders too
Afraid to leave their base
With startling peek-a-boo
The Master shows his face.

Along the road with friends,
Freed from his sepulchre,
The living Way pretends
To be a wayfarer.

He dons another mask:
A beachcomber whose wish
Emboldens him to ask
A breakfast of fresh fish.

* * * * * *
And still in masquerade
Amid a merry chase
God's hide-and-seek is played
Among the human race.
